The hip joint connects the femur to the hip bone. In a similar fashion to the shoulder joint, the joint surfaces are not perfectly matched.

The glenoid labrum, the acetabular lip, provides the surface of the cavity and the ability to hold the femoral head. Unlike the glenoid labrum of the scapural-humeral joint, which has no function but to expand the corresponding cavity, the acetabular lip has an important role in the union of femur and hip; so it is important as it holds the structure together during articulation.
